What this really means is that Duke isn't a hermit yet. His best friend is still alive, he hasn't yet gone to war, and his world hasn't fallen apart the seams. Which means he will have a greater range of expressions - although still somewhat narrow because he never was terribly expressive in the first place.
As this is for a temporary Loss in Paradisa, where Duke's permanent loss is his sight, there is a little bit of an AU twist on it.
Duke will believe he has always been blind, to avoid any repeats of "Hey, why can't I see." This means that he no longer knows how to use a sword, or... any other physical weaponry. On the other hand, he is much better about "How far away do you want the spell, and do you want that to be the edge or the center the area?" when casting his spells, and being accurate at that. He is reluctantly resigned to the fact that he will never be a knight, but is rather happy to have his friend Elucifur, who acts half the time as a seeing-eye-Krityan, which means that someone doesn't have to do boring Duke-the-mage sitting duty, and he still gets to help out with things.
He's not terribly thrilled about those rumors of war he'd been hearing bits about though...
